What is poor memory a symptom of?

Poor memory can signal stress, lack of sleep, depression, or thyroid issues. It may also be linked to vitamin B12 deficiency or side effects from medications such as antidepressants and sleep aids.

In some cases, it reflects early stages of dementia, brain injury, or stroke. Multitasking overloads the brain and worsens recall. Chronic fatigue, anxiety, and alcohol use also contribute.

In older adults, it may be related to reduced blood flow in the brain. Other causes include deficiencies in vitamin D or folate, and infections such as COVID.

If you often forget recent events, names, or misplace items, consult a neurologist. Blood tests and brain imaging can help identify the cause. Do not ignore symptoms, early treatment can slow or stop progression.
