Local Pack Rankings
How to Rank Higher on Google Maps
Google has confirmed exactly three factors decide Maps and Local Pack ranking: relevance, distance, and prominence. Almost every piece of local SEO advice you will read is really just a specific action aimed at one of these three. Understanding which is which tells you where your time actually pays off.
The Three Ranking Factors
Relevance
How well your Google Business Profile matches what someone searched. Category accuracy is the biggest lever here, followed by keywords appearing naturally in your business description, services, and posts. A business filed under the wrong secondary category is invisible for searches it should win.
Distance
How close your pinned location is to the searcher (or to the area they searched, like "restaurants in Thonglor"). You cannot move your building, but you can make sure your pin is placed exactly right and that you have listed every service area you actually cover, not just your storefront address.
Prominence
How well-known and well-reviewed Google judges your business to be, based on review count, review velocity, star rating, citation volume, and offline prominence signals like press mentions and links. This is the factor with the most room to improve and the slowest to move.
Actions That Actually Move Each Factor
Get your categories exactly right
One primary category that matches your core business precisely, plus every accurate secondary category available. Wrong or missing categories are the single fastest fix with the biggest immediate impact on relevance.
Fill in every profile field
Services, products, attributes, business description, opening date. Profiles with complete data consistently outrank thinner profiles at similar review counts, because Google has more confirmed relevance signals to match against.
Build review velocity, not just review count
A steady stream of new reviews signals an active, trustworthy business far more than a large historical total with nothing recent. Ask for reviews at the moment of highest satisfaction, right after service delivery, not in a delayed follow-up email nobody opens.
Post regularly
Google Business Profile posts (offers, updates, events) are a small but real freshness signal, and they double as a low-effort way to reinforce your target keywords in your own words.
Get local citations right
Consistent NAP across the directories Google actually references matters more than the raw number of directories you appear on. A handful of accurate, relevant citations outperforms fifty inconsistent ones from an old bulk-submission service.
Earn local links and mentions
A mention from a Bangkok food blog, local news site, or industry association carries real prominence weight, more than an equivalent link from an unrelated site with higher generic authority.
Respond to every review
Response rate and response speed are both tracked. A thoughtful reply to a negative review, not a defensive one, also does real work convincing the next searcher to choose you.
This Looks Different by Industry
The three factors are universal, but which one is your bottleneck depends heavily on what you run. A new restaurant is usually held back by review velocity and category accuracy, see our restaurant SEO guide for the specifics. A clinic is more often held back by trust signals and E-E-A-T, covered in our clinic SEO guide. Hotels face a different problem entirely, winning brand searches before area searches, detailed in our hotel SEO guide, and cafes typically need to close the gap between Instagram discovery and Google conversion, covered in our cafe SEO guide.
If you have not audited where you currently stand on all three factors, start with our local SEO audit checklist before investing time in any single fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?
Category and profile fixes can show movement within 1 to 3 weeks for lower-competition terms. Prominence-driven ranking gains (competing on review count and citations against established competitors) typically take 2 to 4 months of consistent work.
Does the Local Pack use the same ranking factors as regular Google search?
They overlap but are not identical. The Local Pack (and Maps) weighs proximity and Google Business Profile signals much more heavily. Regular organic results weigh your website content and backlink profile more heavily. A business can rank well in one and poorly in the other.
Can I rank in a neighborhood where I do not have a physical location?
Not reliably through your Google Business Profile itself, Google generally will not rank a pinned location for searches centered on a different area. What does work is a dedicated, genuinely useful page on your website targeting that neighborhood, feeding organic (not Maps) visibility there.
Do paid Google Ads affect Maps ranking?
No. Local Service Ads and Google Ads appear in separate, clearly labeled slots above or alongside organic Local Pack results. They do not influence your organic Maps position, though they can capture clicks that would otherwise go to the organic listings.
