Google Business Profile Categories: The Full Guide
Category selection is the single fastest fix in local SEO, and the most commonly neglected one. It costs nothing, takes minutes, and directly determines which searches your business is even eligible to appear for. Here is how to get it right.
How to Choose Your Categories
1. Search your ideal customer's exact query
Type the phrase a customer would actually use ("thai restaurant sukhumvit", "dental clinic near me") into Google and note which category the top-ranking competitors use. This is the fastest way to see what Google considers relevant for that query.
2. Pick the single most specific primary category
Your primary category carries the most ranking weight of any category field. It should be the most specific option that still accurately describes the core of your business, not the most general one.
3. Add every accurate secondary category
There is no real downside to adding secondary categories, as long as each one is genuinely accurate. This is the easiest way to become eligible for a wider set of relevant searches.
4. Avoid categories you cannot honestly support
A category that does not match your actual offering risks a suggested-edit dispute or a suspension review later, and it will not convert well even if it does drive impressions.
5. Re-check categories every 6 months
As your services change, your categories should change with them. This takes minutes and is one of the highest-leverage recurring local SEO tasks that gets skipped most often.
Common Category Mistakes
Choosing a broader category than your business
"Restaurant" instead of "Thai Restaurant" or "Vegan Restaurant" feels safer but competes you against every restaurant in the city for a term you cannot realistically win, while missing the specific searches you could win easily.
Leaving useful secondary categories unclaimed
A hotel with a restaurant on-site, a clinic that also does aesthetic procedures, a cafe that also roasts beans, each of these should claim the secondary categories that match, since they open up additional relevant searches at no cost.
Copying a competitor's category list exactly
What works for a competitor with a different service mix, review history, and location is not automatically right for you. Categories should match what you actually do, not what a competitor happens to be ranking under.
Never revisiting categories after the business changes
A business that pivoted, added a service line, or narrowed its focus over the years often still carries its original category from setup day. This is one of the fastest, lowest-effort fixes available in local SEO.
Selecting a category Google flags as sensitive
Some categories (financial services, certain healthcare specialties) trigger extra verification scrutiny. If your business genuinely fits one of these, the fix is more documentation up front, not avoiding the accurate category.
Categories Are One Piece of a Bigger Picture
Getting categories right fixes relevance, but relevance is only one of the three factors Google uses to rank Maps results. See our guide on how to rank higher on Google Maps for the other two, distance and prominence, and what actually moves each.
If your profile is currently suspended, category mismatches (especially a keyword-stuffed name paired with a category that does not fit) are a common root cause, see our guide to fixing a suspended profile if that applies to you. Frequently Asked Questions
How many categories can I add to my Google Business Profile?
One primary category plus up to nine secondary categories, ten total. Most businesses do not need all ten, but few businesses should stop at just the primary.
Does changing my category affect my existing rankings?
It can, in both directions. A more accurate category typically improves relevant rankings within days to weeks, but a business that was inadvertently ranking well under a too-broad category can see short-term volatility as Google recalculates relevance. This is normal and settles.
Can I choose a category that does not exist in Google's list?
No. Google Business Profile only allows categories from its predefined list, custom category names are not supported. If nothing matches exactly, choose the closest accurate option rather than the closest-sounding but inaccurate one.
Do categories affect the regular Google Maps app search filters too?
Yes. The category also determines which filter chips (like "Dine-in", "Delivery", or specialty filters) become available on your profile, which affects how discoverable you are to users browsing rather than searching a specific term.
